In October 2016, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga called a press conference at his Capital Hill Office where he alleged that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family was linked to then alleged loss of Sh5.2 billion at the Ministry of Health which was under investigation (and has never been resolved to this day).
Raila adduced internal audit reports of MOH to show that Sandales International Ltd, which had been paid Sh41 million by Ministry of Health was owned by President Uhuru’s Ms Kathleen Kihanya (Cousin), Ms Nyokabi Muthama (Sister) and Mr Samson Kamiri as directors.
ODM Leader Raila stated: “This scandal is President Kenyatta’s. He must deal with it as such. He must tell the country what he knows, when he knew it and what he did when he knew it,” Mr Odinga. That was four years ago. Raila’s words ring as true as they did in 2016.
Besides being cousins, Kathleen Kihanya and her cousin Nyokabi Muthama are closely linked to the Kenyatta Trust, where Nyokabi is a director and Kathleen is a mentor and President Uhuru is the Patron. Kathleen Kihanya admitted to the media owning the company but said the deal was above board and said she was ready for investigations.
But even before the Ministry of Health could conclude investigations on the Ksh. 41 Million payment to Sundales International Ltd owned by both Katheleen Kihanya and Nyokabi Muthama, their daughters made it to the headlines with a scandal of their own which tied to KEMSA and Covid-19 Pandemic.
Indeed, it is a uncanny twist of fate that today Kathleen Kihanya’s daughter and Nyokabi Muthama’s daughter who are embroiled in a similar scandal at the same Health Ministry as their mothers were barely 4 years ago only this time the amount involved is double (Ksh. 84M) what Kihanya and Muthama were paid in 2016.
How the daughters June Nduta Kinyua (Kathleen’s daughter) and Samantha Ngina Muthama (Nyokabi’s Daughter) bagged such a lucrative deal in a state agency has set tongues wagging. Many Kenyans are convinced that the critical Health sector is the preferred cash cow of the members of the first family.
The Duo are directors of Ziwala Limited, the company in the eye of the storm after it was reportedly awarded a tender worth Ksh. 84 Million by KEMSA through single sourcing to supply face masks. The tender was awarded around the same time the Chinese Millionaire Jack Ma donated 1 Million face masks to Kenya.
The company was to supply 120,000 pieces of KN95 face masks at what has been described by Nation as “inflated price of Sh700 a piece.” A search on Jumia reveals the retail price of KN95 face mask is Ksh. 350 meaning Zimala had been awarded a tender to supply at double the price, translating to extra ksh. 42 Million.
On the company website ziwala.co.ke declares that the company is privately owned and managed and lists its directors as June Kinyua and Njau Muriuki. Both are cousins as their mothers Mumbi (mother of Njau) and Kathleen (mother of June) are siblings. June and Njau are niece and nephew to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, according to official search at the Company Registry dated 16th July 2020, the current directors and shareholders of Ziwala Limited are Samantha Ngina Muthama with 400 Shares and June Nduta Kinyua with 600 Shares. Both share common address, namely, P.O. Box 19495 GPO Nairobi.
Ziwala Limited describes itself as a company “Offering full outsourced procurement & supply services. We provide our clients with reliability, flexibility and expertise within our specialist industries in Health, Construction, Heavy Equipment, Printing, Dry & Supplementary Foods.”
This new scandal involving Uhuru’s nieces and nephews obtaining inflated tenders from state agencies comes barely a month after Peter Kihanya suddenly increased his shareholding in Sportpesa a matter of days just as the sports betting giant got back its license and sports betting taxes were waived by Treasury CS Ukuru Yattani.
Peter Kihanya is uncle to both June Nduta Kinyua and Njau Muriuki being elder brother to their mothers Kathleen and Mumbi Kihanya. June is named after their late grandmother Grace Nduta, mother to Josphat Muiruri Kihanya, their patriach, who passed on in 2016.
On the father’s side, June Kinyua is daughter of Ernest Kinyua Kamau, son of former nominated MP Jackson Kamau Chege as per court documents filed in 2007. Mr. Kinyua Kamau is the managing Director of Tea Holdings Ltd based in Limuru.
June Kinyua went to University of Buckingham. After her grandfather the Late Chege died on 19th November 2004 leaving a Ksh. 3 Billion estate, June Kinyua was forced to sue her father and Late Hon Njenga Karume, the administrators of his estate, around 2007 to access school fees to the tune of approximately Ksh. 3 Million per year.
June appears to be the eldest of the three (3) cousins who are linked to Zimala Limited as the pictures circulating the social media reveal she has already started a family. Njau Muriuki too went to United Kingdom for further studies graduating around 2015. Samantha Ngina Muthama social media accounts reveal she is barely in mid-twenties.
The award of KN95 Face Masks tender to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s relatives at an inflated price which was first reported by Daily Nation has seen many Kenyans call to question the Government’s commitment to fight corruption. The incident has also raised questions as the management of the Covid-19 Billions.
It remains to be seen how the State House will react to this latest alleged scandal involving members of the first family. In 2018, President Uhuru promised Kenyans that he will spare no one in the fight against graft. “You can be my brother or my sister or my closest political ally but if you are corrupt we will fight you,” Uhuru pledged.
But if the handling of scandal involving Kathleen Kihanya and Nyokabi Muthama and their company Limited is any precedent, nothing will be done to Ngina Muthama, June Kinyua and Njau Muriuki or their company Zamala Limited. Just as suddenly as the story broke out, the investigations into the scandal will soon disappear.
